A humanoid base to get you started making custom pixel art characters.

  • Four-direction turnaround.
  • Standing frame plus two frames of walking animation in all four directions.
  • Designed with small and large-scale sprites in mind.
  • RPG Maker-ready sheet (tested in VX Ace at x100 and x200 scales).
  • More sheets to come!

Currently contains one sheet ("Base A1") of multiple turnarounds with a variety of natural and fantasy skin tones. This asset pack will always be free, but donations are welcome, as they'll help me continue to develop this pack.

Terms of use

✔️ Credit me upon use.

✔️ All personal use of the base is allowed, including making sprites that your friends or creative team can use.

For commercial use:

✔️ Using the base for sprites in a commercial game, including as-is (that is, without alterations), is permitted. HOWEVER: for artists being paid to make art assets, whoever's paying you should be aware you're using this base. Do not pass it off as your own.

❌ Using the base to make a character pack for sale on a storefront is not permitted. This may seem like a weird line to draw, but I'm sharing this base for free to make game dev easier, not for other spriters to turn a profit on.

❌ Using the base for characters that can be purchased "in-game" for real currency is not permitted. Similar logic to above; you'd be using work I've shared for free to turn a profit.

❓For other commercial uses, ask. All other rights reserved.

Feel free to share links to projects you use the base in, I'd like to see them.

Tips

  • When making custom sprites, don't feel constrained by the lines and contours of the base sprite body; treat them instead as guidelines. Some parts that are in shadow on the base sprite sheet, like the forearm that swings forward on the walking frames, may look better without a shadow on a custom sprite. Making your sprite readable is more important than trying to achieve realistic lighting or proportions.
  • The base sprite has an "allowance" of one pixel on all sides. If you use this sheet in RPG Maker, you may need to increase the canvas dimensions if your custom sprites are more than a pixel taller (e.g., after adding hair) or wider (e.g., gauntlets that stick out past the base arm shape) than the base sprite.
    • To get the dimensions for a full-length sprite sheet, multiply the width (in pixels) of your widest sprite by 12 and the length of your tallest sprite by 8.
